The examiner is not marking you based on whether you agree, disagree or partially agree. You can choose any answer you want. The examiner is only marking your ability to present a clear opinion and support it. Many teachers will tell students to avoid the partially agree answer because it is not easy to write. So many students make a mistake with it. You need to be trained to use a partially agree answer. This means that choosing one side is easier to write and avoids more errors. What is my opinion? I think if you are fully trained in the right way, you can choose the answer that suits your opinion. But if you are not sure, go for the one sided. If you are aiming for band 7, the problem might be in how you address the task, your organisation, your linking or the number of mistakes you make in grammar and vocabulary.
So your opinion is that education should be mandatory and education should not be mandatory? This means you have no clear opinion. You must present a clear position in the IELTS opinion essay – you will get a low mark for Task Response if you fail to present and support a clear position. A balanced view does not mean you agree and disagree. It means you present a specific view which is quantified.
Thanks for your advance lesson. I have watch your advance lesson: agree and disagree essay. Since the essay question has only one opinion to agree or disagree, but what if the essay question like this one: ” Some people claim that not enough of waste from home not recycled. They say that the only way to recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement. To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste? ”
what should I plan my answer? I have difficulty to identify which opinion or fact in order to respond to the question. Thanks Liz and I hope, I’ll get response this time.
So you are of the opinion that Pauline Cullen is wrong about agree or disagree essays, as she has clearly pointed out on her website that only mentioning the part that you agree with for this particular type of essay will guarantee a lower band score.
Moreover, it seems that your firm conviction is that writing a counterargument and refuting it in the conclusion is totally unnecessary in this case.
dear liz,if the ques is asked to what extent do you agree or disagree, then should i write whole essay mentioning agree/disagree or both in different paragraphs…??
You are scored on presenting a relevant position with supporting ideas. It doesn’t matter if you agree / disagree or if you present a specific view (partial agreement). You can choose any of them. It won’t affect your score. Many teachers encourage students to use the one sided view because it is easier and students make less mistakes doing that. However, using a partial view is fine – but make sure your opinion is very clear.
I have a question to ask in related to a recent exam question that you have posted. the question is, ‘Countries with longer working days are more economically successful, but there are also some negative consequences. Do you agree?’
In this essay I feel like there are three independent areas that I need to connect each other. How longer working hours develop country economy and how longer working days bring social issues.
Is this correct? Or my entire essay should be on longer working days and social issues?
I think that longer working days develop economy is a fact (according to this question) and we don’t need to describe a given fact. Just mention it only in introduction?
You are agree or you can disagree or you can partially agree which means presenting a specific opinion. I suggest you get my advanced writing task lessons to learn the right techniques:
I Hope you are doing great!!
Just wanted to ask you. Is agree or disagree essay and argumentative essay same? If it is so, why there is no REFUTATION or the counter argument in your essay. As far as I know, there has to be REFUTATION or COUNTER ARGUMENT for the essay to be argumentative. It is the rule for any argumentative essay. Please correct if I am wrong. Thank you
Statistics shows that obesity is on the increase and the pressure could be felt on the healthcare system. In my opinion, i agree that the introduction of more physical education lessons in the school curriculum will go a long way in solving this problem.
Any IELTS essay which asks for your opinion, is only looking for your opinion. You state what your opinion is in the introduction and then explain it in the body. No counter argument is necessary. This applies for the following instructions:
Do you agree or disagree?
To what extent do you agree?
What do you think of this opinion?
I am still waiting for a response from your side.
In the meanwhile, I’ a bit confused after watching several tips or strategies using in task2. The thing is Could you please tell me the Essay structure will be same for all types : Like agree/disagree, Problem and solution, advantages and disadvantages, Discussion essay, Positive and negative.
I appreciate for your time and effort to reply my question. I still have confusion with agree or disagree and argumentative essay. So both are same. That means we can follow same structure for both them. Is that correct?
