Prescott High School Air Force JROTC Cadet Sophia Voelkel entered The State SAR enhanced Program. She had to write an essay to show how the JROTC helped her become a better citizen and had to be involved in extra curricular activities in the school. She had to be a leader in her detachment and be nominated by both the commanding officer of her detachment and her principal. She won the Prescott Chapter award and placed second at the State Society level. She was awarded the Enhanced Medal, certificate, and a $50.00 Check from the Prescott Chapter and a $100.00 check from our State Society.
The “Medal Package” includes a medal with drape, ribbon, certificate, and SAR presentation folder.
Cadets are selected using the following criteria (these requirements are also set forth in the parent military service directives to JROTC Units.)
The General Richard Chapter currently awards the Bronze JROTC Medal to cadets enrolled in thirteen (13) JROTC program in area high schools.
JROTC Enhanced Program – Chapter Level
The JROTC Enhanced Program; i.e., the “Outstanding Cadet (OC)” program, requires that a cadet write an original 500-700 word essay in addition to meeting the above listed criteria.
The Tucson Chapter held it's final board and breakfast meeting before the summer break on May 16th , 2015 at the Old Pueblo Grill. The Flowing Wells JROTC Color Guard open up the meeting by presenting and posting the colors. The speaker for the morning was Major Robert L. DeWitt, retired. Major DeWitt talked about his past and his experiences with the JROTC program and the Flowing Wells High School program in particular. After his talk, Major DeWitt was given a Certificate of Appreciation by President Gerry Lawford. Also honored at the luncheon were Sahuarita HS JROTC Essay Winner Madeline Arbogast. Cadet Arbogast read her essay and was presented with a $100.00 check and a Chapter Level "Outstanding Cadet Certificate." Other awards given at the luncheon were: Bronze Good Citizenship Medal to Commander Brad Roberson and Ten Year Membership Certificate to Robert W. Vint (sometimes called "the younger".) Not one but two Certificates of Appreciation were given to John Patla plus a tie. John has been serving the Color Guard diligently as a drummer for various functions although he personally has not been able to qualify as a SAR. It's our hope that we may be able to correct that situation in the near future. Not present but given the Roger Sherman Medal Awards were: James Kimbrough, Col. William T. Lincoln, George Lipphardt and Joseph McGowan. Col. Lincoln also received a 30 Year Membership Certificate. As an aside, Al Niemeyer was given the miniature "tin cup" and cigar award by Color Guard Commander Rick Collins for his diligent attendance at various Color Guard functions during the past few weeks. Commander Collins then poured a shot of the "hard" stuff into the cup which was gleefully consumed by Compatriot Niemeyer. The cigar was later smoked on the Niemeyer patio. It is hereby noted that our Country is still in search of a good five cent cigar. Lest it should be forgotten, Tucson Chapter President Gerard Lawford was honored for his five years as a SAR member.
In an action packed meeting on May 21st 2016, Tucson Chapter President John Niemeyer inducted two young brothers Franklin and Max Pierce into the Society. Proud mother Nicole Pierce and grandmother Bev Giordano partcipated in the ceremony. Arizona Society President Steve Miller awarded the Knight Essay Certificate and Medal to winner Alian Goday. President Miller then awarded the Outstanding Cadet Certificate and Medal to JROTC Cadet Karla Hensley with John Lyons assisting. Cadet Hensley was also given a check for $100.00. The Chapter gave special honor to Flowing Wells High School JROTC instructor Major (Ret) Robert DeWitt who has served the JROTC students for over twenty years, giving his economically challenged area students access to higher education and good jobs after graduation. For his outstanding effort, Arizona Society President Steve Miller awarded Major Dewitt the Silver Good Citizenship Certificate and Medal. Later, in honor of this year's 50th anniversary of the Miranda Supreme court ruling, Federal Court Judge Bruce J. MacDonald gave an outstanding talk on the Constitutional right to a speedy and public trial as spelled out in the 6th Amendment. After his talk Judge MacDonald was given a Certificate of Appreciation by Chapter President John Niemeyer.
